Ms. LéShaw
"I cannot teach anybody anything; I can only make them think."- Socrates
The focus of this class will be on developing, evaluating, and implementing the skills need to excel in both school and society, while staying in compliance with California English Standards. It is expected of the students to take advantage of the class and the coursework, and use what they have ascertained towards growth in their academic endeavors.
MY PHILOSOPHY
I believe that school should give the tools needed to be successful in life, and to achieve what you feel that you deserve from it. Therefore, I have structured my class for you to gain the maximum benefit. My goal is to push you to; expand your mind, to make you think of literature, writing, education and the world around you in ways never thought of before.
ASSIGNMENTS/GRADING POLICIES
Grading will be based on a points system. Points are earned from journals, class work, homework, and tests/quizzes, and projects. Early warning, a few assignments will be worth a substantial amount of points. If these assignments are not done you will not pass this class!!!! These assignments include a research paper at the end of 1st semester, and a project due at the end of 2nd semester.
ABSENT/MISSED WORK
It is the sole responsibility of each student to turn in the required work on the day it is due. If a student is absent or misses class on the due date, work must be turned in upon return to class without being reminded by me, otherwise points will be deducted accordingly. If an assignment fails to be turned in within a week of the original due date will receive a zero. Major assignments will be expected on the due date NO EXCEPTIONS.
CLASSWORK/HOMEWORK
Participation in class is important and will be factored into final point scoring. Journal assignments will be assigned and turned in at the end of the unit, and points will also be factored into the grade. Students will read a total of 3 individual reading books for the year. The genre of books will change over the course of the year.Between one and two novels will be read and discussed during the course of the year, from which students will be questioned and tested. Additionally, students will take district benchmark exams, which will be factored into their grade.
